Nature Trail at Karnala Bird Sanctuary

The Karnala Bird Sanctuary is located in Panvel Taluka of Raigad District, outside Mumbai, India near Matheran and Karjat. The sanctuary lies just off the Mumbai-Pune National highway to Goa. It is 12 km from the Panvel. It is home to over 150 species of resident and 37 species of migratory birds who visit the sanctuary during winter. It is one of the more popular destination for avid bird-watchers and hikers in the Mumbai area. Karnala Bird Sanctuary is centered around the historic Karnala Fort which stands 475 metres high.

Program Purpose : This program aims to give the kids a sneak peek in the nature's bounty available close to the city,study the experience nature at its best during winter and witness a rural life setup and work culture of small scale industries.

Kids Trek
Venue Lohagad - Lonavala

Lohagad (Marathi: लोहगड, iron fort) is one of the many hill forts of Maharashtra state in India. Situated close to the hill station Lonavala and 52 km (32 mi) northwest of Pune, Lohagad rises to an elevation of 1,033m (3,389 ft) above sea level. The fort is connected to the neighboring Visapur fort by a small range. The fort was under the Maratha empire for the majority of time, with a short period of 5 years under the Mughal empire. Lohagad is part of the Western Ghats. It rises to an elevation of 1,033 m (3,389 ft) above sea level, and is located to the southwest of the larger Visapur fort. During the monsoon, the top of the Fort is covered with mist and clouds and becomes particularly wet with growing moss.

Kondana Caves

Kondana Caves - Karjat With a small Waterfall at the top, these ancient caves lay at the end of an easy trek, Kondane has a reason for everyone to cheer. Kondana Caves are the  ancient buddhist caves dated back to 200 BC. The caves enclose sculptures, viharas, chaityas and stupas. The sculptures and stupas are the specimens of Buddhist architecture. Apart from the lush greenery, cascading waterfall is a major attraction at the caves.

Winter Trek
Venue Dukes Nose

Duke’s Nose named after Duke Wellington, is a cliff at Khandala near Lonavala. The Cliff is pointed like a snakes pointed head portion (hood) and hence the name Nagphani (Nag means snake and phani means hood). The name Dukes’nose is derived as the cliff looked like the shape of the Duke. This is a marvelous picnic spot nearby Lonavala.

Trek to Karnala

While going on the Mumbai – Goa road, one will easily notice Karnala fort – A thumb like rock resting on a mountain. The fort is famous for its strange pinnacle and the bird sanctuary that is setup in the forest below.

The fort, which was once ruled by the great warrior – Shivaji Maharaj; was of great importance in the history to keep a watch on trades between Mumbai and konkan.

The campsite overlooks a hill with a natural scenic beauty and adventure points right at the campsite. Being on very high altitude the weather is pleasant and favorable all round the year.
